Vase “ALINE” | Boom, Belgium | 1950–1951
Mid-Century with Art Deco Influence — Mixed Glass Decoration Techniques
This rare black glass vase was produced by the renowned Boom glassworks in Belgium around 1950–1951. The model, titled “Aline”, appears under Nr. 82 in the official factory catalog and stands 164 mm tall.
The piece represents mid-century Belgian design, while still bearing clear Art Deco influences—seen in the structured shape, balanced proportions, and rhythmic decoration.
It features combined decoration techniques:
• Glossy and matte finishes,
• Gilded horizontal bands,
• Embossed floral medallions with raised texture,
• And precision-cut black dots, contrasting with the reflective surface.
The vase still bears its original BOOM label (gold on yellow background), typical of the 1950–1951 production period. This label is documented in the reference book Booms Glas / Verre de Boom (p. 282), confirming its authenticity.
The gilding remains brilliant and largely intact, with only minimal signs of age, giving the piece subtle vintage character while preserving its elegance.
A standout example of Boom’s craftsmanship, this vase combines technical skill with timeless style.
De Rupel was renowned for producing decorative glassware with sophisticated color palettes and luxurious metallic accents, making this piece a beautiful example of the era’s aesthetic. A timeless collector’s item, it showcases the Belgian glassworks’ dedication to artistry and quality.
De Rupel glassworks, established in 1925 in Boom, Belgium—a town nestled between Brussels and Antwerp—initially specialized in producing mold-blown beer glasses, including the iconic Duvel glass. In 1935, the company appointed Paul Heller as chief designer, who introduced decorative glassware to their repertoire. By 1936, De Rupel was renowned for its distinctive black vases adorned with hand-painted floral and architectural motifs. The factory also produced various glassware lines, such as Artver, Artlux, Boom, and Arlecchino, encompassing vases, stemware, lampshades, and vanity sets. Despite their success, De Rupel ceased operations in 1971.
