This is an authentic 356 desk chair, designed by the Dutch industrial designer W.H. Gispen. The design, dating from around 1930, is an icon of Nieuwe Zakelijkheid (New Objectivity) and an important piece of Dutch design.
The chair has a functional construction with a swivel base and a chrome-plated metal frame. The seat and backrest are upholstered in a brownish-grey ribbed fabric, which forms a warm contrast with the cool metal. Characteristic of this model are the armrests, made of black Gissoliet, an early form of bakelite that Gispen often used in his designs. This material underlines the industrial and modernist character of the chair.
This piece is in a vintage condition that reflects its long history. The original materials show an authentic patina, which contributes to the character of the object. The chair is structurally solid and functional, retaining its original shape and appearance.
