Product description
Val Saint Lambert “Lulea” Crystal Vase — René Delvenne, Studio Cristal, Limited Edition 1/6 An exceptional “Lulea” crystal vase by Val Saint Lambert, designed by the celebrated Belgian designer René Delvenne in the 1950s. Standing an impressive 38 cm high, it is one of the tallest vases in the collection, emphasizing the elegant verticality and sculptural character of Delvenne’s post-war design language. The Lulea model is documented in an original Val Saint Lambert catalogue among the Pièces d’ornementation artistique. Closely related forms from the same series were also presented at the Expo 58 World Exhibition in Brussels, underlining the importance of this collection within Val Saint Lambert’s mid-century production. This particular example is especially rare. It was produced by Studio Cristal at Val Saint Lambert, a specialist artistic division created for experimental and limited-edition crystal rather than regular serial production. The vase retains its original Studio Cristal – Val Saint Lambert label and is hand-inscribed “1/6”, indicating an edition of only six examples. Its colour is another exceptional feature: a rich deep blue with blue-green, almost marine tones, gradually fading into clear crystal toward the base. This colourway does not appear in the regular catalogue production, making this Studio Cristal version particularly distinctive. The elongated form, asymmetrical mouth and flowing internal curves create a strong sculptural presence, while the thick crystal beautifully refracts light and shifts from transparent blue to intense saturated tones depending on illumination. With its documented design, René Delvenne attribution, Studio Cristal provenance and tiny edition of six, this is a highly desirable collector’s piece that would also sit beautifully in a contemporary interior. In very good vintage condition, with only minimal signs of use and one very small glass imperfection, visible in the photos. About Studio Cristal: Studio Cristal was a special artistic department within Val Saint Lambert, devoted to experimental glassmaking, special colours, unique pieces and very small editions. It represents the more creative and studio-oriented side of the historic Belgian manufactory, where traditional crystal craftsmanship was combined with greater artistic freedom. Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks. The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp. The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics. Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation. Will be well packaged and protected
