Product description
Val Saint Lambert “Cendrillon” Crystal Vase — Charles Graffart, Belgium, c. 1940s An impressive vintage crystal vase by the celebrated Belgian crystal manufacturer Val Saint Lambert, created to a design by Charles Graffart, one of the most important designers in the history of the factory. The model, “Cendrillon”, is documented in an original Val Saint Lambert catalogue from the 1940s, providing an important period reference for its attribution and authenticity. The catalogue illustration clearly shows the distinctive cylindrical silhouette and the four horizontal registers of decoration. Made from substantial clear crystal, the vase is entirely hand-cut, with deep, precisely executed facets arranged in rhythmic bands around the body. The alternating polished surfaces, rounded cuts and sharp vertical facets create a particularly architectural appearance, while the heavy crystal beautifully captures and refracts the light. The elaborate cutting demonstrates the exceptional technical quality for which Val Saint Lambert became internationally renowned. The vase remains in good vintage condition. There are a few very small chips and a couple of light scratches consistent with age and previous use. These are minor and do not detract from the overall appearance; please refer carefully to the photographs for the condition. With its strong geometric character and remarkable optical qualities, Cendrillon works beautifully in a contemporary or minimalist interior, while its documented design and association with Charles Graffart also make it an appealing collector’s piece and a significant example of Val Saint Lambert’s 20th-century crystal production. Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks. The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp. The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics. Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation. Will be well packaged and protected
