Ingo Maurer himself coined that the Uchiwa series has had great relevance in his career. Not only that this Modell was very successfull, Ingo Maurer himself said he was then turning towards the creation of „light atmospheres“ rather than designing illuminated objects.
Relying on traditional Japanese craftsmanship he designed this amazing lighting series which is outstanding in its time. In itself the Uchiwa is an appropriation of and homage to Japanese culture and craftsmanship. The shades all were handcrafted in a traditional Japanese workshop, before assembly and distribution by Ingo Maurer’s Munich company M Design.
