About this seller
Private sellerProduct description
Set of two Burmese lacquerware boxes with lids. For backpackers who have ever visited Southeast Asia, these are alms bowls (hsun-ok), with stepped stupa lids. One in red (cinnabar) lacquer, one in black, both with a reddish-brown lacquered interior. The boxes are very light, consistent with lacquer on a woven bamboo core. Height red 17 cm, black 15 cm, diameter both 13 cm. Weight 180 and 160 grams. Age-related wear and damage, see photos. The objects probably date from the first half of the 20th Century or slightly before. They could also be betel boxes.
