Product description
Tsongkhapa Brass Statue Tibetan Buddhist Lama Silvered Engraved Vintage Nepal.
Vintage Tibetan Buddhist Brass Statue of Je Tsongkhapa, Silvered and Engraved
A finely detailed brass figure of Je Tsongkhapa (1357–1419), the great Tibetan master and founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, the tradition of the Dalai Lamas. He is one of the most revered figures in the Himalayan world and is honoured as an emanation of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom.
The iconography
Tsongkhapa sits in meditation posture on a double lotus throne, wearing his characteristic pointed pandita hat with long side flaps, the symbol of a great scholar. His hands form the Dharmachakra mudra, the gesture of turning the Wheel of the Teaching, and hold the stems of two lotuses that rise to his shoulders:
On his right: the flaming Sword of Wisdom, which cuts through ignorance
On his left: the Book of the Prajñāpāramitā (Perfection of Wisdom sutra)
Together, the sword and the book identify him as an emanation of Manjushri. It’s a classic, instantly recognisable image for anyone familiar with Tibetan art.
Craftsmanship and finish
The figure is cast in brass with a silvered surface. Over time the silvering has gently worn on the raised areas, revealing the warm golden brass underneath and creating a beautiful two-tone silver-and-gold effect. The robes are hand-engraved with fine patterns on the front, and the back is decorated with engraved floral rosettes, a detail often missing from simpler figures. The face is serene, with half-closed eyes and an urna mark on the forehead.
Base: the base is open and hollow, not sealed. There’s a small stamped mark on the back of the base.
Why it’s special
Tsongkhapa is harder to find than the more common Buddha and Tara figures on the market
Correct, detailed iconography: the pandita hat, the Dharmachakra mudra, and the sword and book on lotuses
Engraved on both sides, including the back, a sign of more careful workmanship
A beautiful aged two-tone patina of silver and brass
A meaningful piece for a meditation space, a home altar, a study, or a collection of Himalayan art
