This triptych is based on the comic book "All American Men of War."
Together, the three paintings in "As I Opened Fire" tell a story, which is further enhanced by the carefully added text.
This work represents a revolution in the art of the 1960s. Formally speaking, Lichtenstein made use of images from popular culture.
He incorporated these into an artistic context by enlarging them, slightly modifying them, and painting them on canvas.
