Product description
Large grandfather clocks once dictated our interiors and, provided they were wound in time, revealed the time of day. I probably don't need to explain that modern technology has since rendered these complex and unreliable timepieces obsolete. However, I didn't feel it was necessary to write them off completely just yet. After all, such a large object in the hall of a home, hotel, or lobby immediately sets the tone. This clock does nothing more than its classic donor: it tells the time. Only now with a drama bordering on megalomania. For this object, I lined the case of an antique grandfather clock from circa 1870 with 3 cm of furniture foam and subsequently upholstered it in a distinctly geometric fabric. Where the mechanical movement once resided, there is now ample room for a modern digital version that produces a considerable amount of light. The closed compartments were opened up with a jigsaw at my own discretion and transformed into display areas. The result is a striking object on the border of furniture, clock, and sculpture. A piece that immediately catches the eye while simultaneously referencing its past with a wink. Standing at a height of no less than 240 cm, the clock still retains its original presence. Where it once dictated the rhythm of the household, it now primarily marks the space in which it stands. This unique object was handcrafted in my studio in Maastricht as part of my research into ‘soft interventions’: reinterpreting discarded or forgotten objects through upholstery, materials, and craftsmanship. Details • Antique grandfather clock, circa 1870 • Unique piece • Fully upholstered case • Working digital clock • Open display compartments • Handmade in Maastricht • Height: 240 cm A remarkable statement piece for design enthusiasts, collectors of unique objects, or anyone looking for something that no one else has.
