Product description
Thomas Benirschke – Postmodern Sculptural Ceramic Teapot, Signed, c. 1982, German Studio Pottery, Original Award Catalogue Included An extraordinary sculptural ceramic teapot by award-winning German artist Thomas Benirschke, dating from around 1982. Its bold asymmetry, playful proportions, and striking black, pink, and white palette capture the experimental spirit of early 1980s European studio ceramics. The rounded satin-black body, elongated pale-pink spout, sweeping ivory-white handle, and architectural pedestal base transform the familiar teapot into an expressive postmodern sculpture. Design & Craftsmanship The teapot combines a rounded body with a cylindrical neck, fitted lid, spherical finial, and exaggerated diagonal spout. Its contrasting surfaces and unconventional proportions create a compelling balance between function, abstraction, and humour. About the Artist & Documentation Thomas Benirschke (born 1954) is a German ceramic artist who trained with Walburga Külz in Erbach, worked in England, and studied ceramic design at the Fachhochschule Wiesbaden (1976–1981). He established his independent practice in 1980. In 1982, he was awarded the Keramikpreis der Frechener Kulturstiftung, recognising his contribution to contemporary studio ceramics. The original 1982 award catalogue documents Benirschke's biography, artistic techniques, and several closely related ceramic works, including a teapot from the same creative period. The artist personally confirmed in a telephone conversation that the present teapot belongs to the same series and period and was produced using the same techniques as the illustrated examples. The original 1982 Keramikpreis catalogue is included in the sale and will be supplied to the buyer together with the teapot.
