Village Street South France Undated Oil on board Image 30x40 cm In wooden frame 45x55 cm Qualifications: Watercolorist, etcher, graphic artist, painter, draftsman and secondary school art teacher Nationality/school: Dutch Born in Hattem on 03-07-1934 Education: Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam 1957-1962 Student of: Gé Röling Sierk Schröder Literature: Scheen 1969-1970 Jacobs 1993 was born in Hattem in 1934 and now lives in Rheeze. From 1957 to 1962, he trained at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. developed into a painter even before his training in Amsterdam. At the Rijksacademie, this rough diamond was primarily refined by Professor Sierk Schröder; he was also trained in graphic techniques. Characteristic of him is that, as he himself puts it, he tries to make visible what moves him internally. is strongly connected to the landscape in his work; he is fascinated by the shapes and colors the landscape possesses. In his work, the landscape is thus turned inside out with the aim of expressing his personal intuition on canvas or paper. Local details disappear as a result, and the work acquires its own visual language; his still lifes are a representation of observed forms brought together into a whole; they are not realistic compositions of ingredients but powerful expressions of his personal experience. This results, among other things, in fascinating floral still lifes, self-portraits, but especially in landscapes, where he shows a preference for the South French atmosphere, but also cloudy skies over the land are beloved subjects for this artist. is fascinated by the shapes and colors the landscape possesses; in his work, the landscape is, as it were, turned inside out, in this way he wants to express his personal intuition on canvas or paper. Through this approach, his work acquires its own visual language; his still lifes are a representation of observed forms brought together into a whole; they are not realistic compositions with clearly defined ingredients but powerful expressions of his personal experience. Although he does not limit himself to one technique, he is primarily a painter, one who can work with various tones as well as numerous colors. In terms of direction, his works best fit under the heading of Expressionism; although he works abstractly, figuration is never far away. Therefore, many of his paintings remain recognizable. What characterizes his work then? Reviewers and art historians have pondered this over the more than 70 years he has been painting. All these observations have several things in common: the artistic craftsmanship is beyond any doubt, the influence of the training at the Amsterdam Rijksacademie is visible in every painting, evident, among other things, from the high quality of the composition. Some quotes: Each of his landscapes is a snapshot, and the artistic development as a whole is the result of natural, spontaneous growth. Nothing is invented or artificial. Every painting is experienced, it comes from within and is therefore not 'conceived' or 'reasoned'. (Wim van der Beek) Color only takes shape – according to him – in balance with other colors, lines, planes, points. That the overall image is considered an impression of a landscape is not the painter's intention but the result. The landscapes of our 17th-century masters also did not exist in reality, although every painter is to some extent a constructivist, but one can hardly count him among the constructivists; for that, he is far too much a painter, an admirable paint mixer, a color analyst, a materials expert; if color initially has no form, it certainly arises on a canvas by him. (Gerhard Fliehe Boeschoten) Also discover his life and work in three special publications: the monograph Schilder (2014), Onbegrensde Passie (2019), and the latest edition Landschappen van herinnering (2026).
