Theo Koster (Emmeloord, Netherlands, 1952) was educated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem. Even then, his paintings were landscape in nature, albeit more subdued than his more recent work, and he developed his own visual language that he uses and extends to this day. Characteristic of his work is the division of the surface; grand skies over land or water with a low horizon and the bright use of color is contemporary. His sense of the right choice of color and the dynamic paint treatment create a specific atmosphere in each individual painting. He also uses graphic and collage techniques. At the same time, his playful and narrative paintings are peaceful, creating a compositional balance almost as a matter of course. In his canvases he incorporates a theme that concerns us collectively: the meaning of human existence. During this process, he makes a connection with his own life, his personal commitment, using a symbolic visual language.
