The Sangha Pair – Antique Burmese Masterpieces (circa 1870)
A monumental set with a proven history. This pair of kneeling monks from the Mandalay period was already offered in the 1970s by the renowned Bodhi Gallery, underscoring their status as authentic collector's items.
The Power of Provenance
What makes this pair unique is not only their impressive height of 52 cm and weight of 11.5 kg, but also their documented journey through time. The accompanying gallery tag (see photos) bears witness to their presence in the European antique world of the last century. Although at the time referred to as Thai "Thappanoms," the technique tells a different, richer story: that of the Burmese master sculptors who specialized in Thayo lacquer relief and Hman-zi-shwe-cha glass mosaic.
Symbolism: The Recipients of Blessing
Depicted in the Namaskara Mudra (veneration and greeting), these statues form a gateway to peace and spiritual concentration. In Buddhist tradition, they are considered bringers of peace and harmony. Over the decades, the original polychromy and gold leaf have beautifully weathered into a patina that only time itself can create.
