Product description
Andre-Marie Ampere ( ), a physicist and mathematician from Lyon, is one of the most brilliant figures in 19th-century French science. Founder of electrodynamics, he gave his name to the unit of measurement for electric current. A child prodigy, he lost his father to the guillotine in 1793 and experienced a youth marked by mourning and passionate love. His diary, the first page of which is reproduced in facsimile in this work, bears witness to a striking sensitivity and humanity. Louis de Launay ( ), a geologist, chief engineer of Mines, and member of the Institut de France, was also a poet, novelist, and biographer. His biography of Ampere, published in 1925 by Librairie Academique Perrin, is based on unpublished documents and remains a reference on the life of the Lyonnais scholar. The work is dedicated to the memory of physicist Alfred Cornu ( ), who continued Ampere's tradition for the glory of French science. This fourth edition is a facsimile authorized by the Société des Amis d'Andre Marie Ampere and the Direction des Etudes et Recherches de l'Electricite de France, with the agreement of the descendants and family of Louis de Launay, Member of the Institute, and Librairie Academique Perrin. Printed by E. Grevin, Imprimerie de Lagny. The work is adorned with 7 full-page engravings, including a facsimile of the first page of Ampere's Journal Amorum (Sunday, April 10, 1796), an autograph manuscript of great intensity. Paperback, printed cream cover, square spine. Overall satisfactory condition, cover slightly yellowed and stained. Fresh interior. Additional details: - Brand: Louis de Launay - Material: Cardboard - Period: 1925
