Product description
This Danish teak sideboard, dating to around the 1960s, brings together a long, low cabinet form and a particularly clear arrangement of storage. Broad sliding doors flank a central bank of five drawers, while tapered legs lift the substantial body clear of the floor. The uninterrupted top, restrained frame and contrast between vertical door grain and horizontal drawer fronts give the piece its composed architectural character.
The sliding doors travel across the front to reveal separate wood-lined compartments. The left contains two shelves and the right one, offering different kinds of open storage behind the same spare façade. Narrow recessed pulls sit close to the outer edges of the doors, preserving the broad grain patterns rather than interrupting them with projecting hardware. Dark bands between the central drawers sharpen the horizontal rhythm without making the cabinet appear heavy.
Opening the drawers reveals a more detailed approach to storage. Their exposed corners show dovetail joints; an upper drawer has green textile lining and slender wooden dividers that form three compartments, while another drawer has a single lengthwise divider. These practical details sit behind deliberately plain fronts. Across the cabinet, the lengthwise grain of the top, vertically figured doors and subtly contrasting frame make the teak and teak-veneered surfaces an active part of the design.
There is light wear to the top and edges, small marks on the dark bands and some variation in colour across the door fronts. Together with its varied interior arrangement, the sideboard’s carefully balanced façade makes it an engaging example of Danish mid-century cabinet design: visually restrained when closed, and more intricate in use.
