This is a wonderful color ink painting scroll, showing the ancient Chinese mythology of the Queen Mother and two maids, the character's expression and details are very vivid.
Queen Mother of the West (known in Japanese as Seiobo ) by Takeuchi Hōzan is a classic example of Meiji-period Nihonga (Japanese-style painting). Hōzan, brings a blend of traditional Daoist mythology and refined Japanese aesthetics to this specific theme.
Hōzan portrays her with the dignified, serene facial features of a high-ranking noblewoman, reflecting the "Bijin-ga" (beautiful women) influence of the Meiji era.
In East Asian mythology, Seiobo is the supreme goddess of the immortals. She resides in the Kunlun Mountains and governs the Peaches of Immortality. These peaches are said to ripen only once every 3,000 years, and consuming them grants eternal life.
