Murano Glass
Venetian glass is the result of a fascinating combination of artisanal tradition and sophisticated industrial techniques, uniting manual skill with technological innovation. This fusion, which has endured for centuries, is at the heart of the rich tradition of Italian glass. The famous Murano glass was born out of a prohibition: although glass had been manufactured in Venice for centuries, in 1291, during the Republic of Venice, its production was banned in the city to prevent fires caused by the high temperatures of the furnaces and to keep the art of glassmaking a secret. All glassmakers were forced to relocate to Murano, and production was restricted to this location.
