This canvas depicts the chemical and physical precipitation of acute social phobia. Jean-Christophe Wallaert is trapped in a vicious circle of existential panic. His deep-seated fear of social contact activates the apocrine glands; the body reacts to an everyday social situation as if its life were in danger. The result is anxiety sweat: a thick, protein-rich substance that biologically smells much more intrusive and pungent than sweat caused by heat.
The composition makes this internal crisis painfully visible. The asymmetrical, wide-open eyes look timidly aside, anxiously anticipating the gaze or rejection of the other. The extremely thin, angular arms are convulsively distorted—frozen in an uncomfortable posture between defensive warding off and the inability to hide oneself.
The patchy, feverish red and brown tones on his torso reflect the hot flashes of anxiety, while the nervously scratched, blue background functions as the oppressive walls of a social phobia. Sweat Odor is a relentless expressionistic portrait of human vulnerability, where the scent of acute social anxiety almost tangibly emanates from the canvas.
