Product description
Magnificent set of three Wall lights by Mathieu Mategot for Atelier Mategot. France, 1950s. Very rare and hard-to-find pieces by this fabulous designer. Yellow lacquered perforated metal structure with brass trim. The reflectors are made of brass, with small openings allowing a soft beam of light to pass through. Brass details adorn and decorate the Wall lights. Each holds two small screw-in bulbs, 6 in total (supplied). Height 32 cm. Width 26 cm. Depth 6 cm. Excellent general condition, some traces of time, nothing significant, see photos. Work perfectly. Mathieu Mategot: 1910 - 2001. M. Matégot was born in 1910 in Tapio-Sully, Hungary. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Budapest from 1925, where he met Vasarely. He arrived in Paris in 1931. From 1939 to 1944, he dedicated himself to tapestry work. During the Second World War, he was assigned to a mechanical construction factory and worked with steel and its derivatives. Influenced during the war by perforated sheet metal in Germany, he envisioned a new use for metal applied to decoration. In 1964, he decided to devote his time exclusively to tapestry and ceased decoration. The first non-figurative cartoon painter, accustomed to wall optics as a painter and theater decorator, he executed new cartoons in a completely innovative style published in Aubusson. He was initially influenced by Jean Lurçat but then freed himself to adopt a rigorously abstract conception. Officer of the Ordre des Arts et Lettres, Grand Prix d'Honneur of the International Exhibition of Madrid in 1953, Gold Medal of the Société d'Encouragement à l'Art et à l'Industrie in 1955, Diploma of Honour of the Universal Exhibition of Brussels in 1958 and Gold Medal of the XII Triennale di Milano, he is recognized as a major artist. His deserved reputation earned him commissions from Air France and the Casino de Cannes, among others, for projects whose design and execution he oversaw.
