"Spring around the corner" by Joseph Rethlin
Oil painting on linen canvas
92 x 73 x 2 cm, unframed
Signed bottom right
In this painting, Joseph Rethlin explores the vitality and renewal of spring through the image of a bouquet of red tulips placed in a purple vase at the center of the composition. The flowers, vivid and luminous, emerge against a background divided into fields of blue and soft yellow, creating a strong visual contrast that energizes the scene.
The simplified shapes and bold palette bring the composition close to abstraction while maintaining a clear reference to the natural world. The pink surface supporting the vase introduces warmth and balance, reinforcing the harmony between color and space.
Through this work, Joseph Rethlin seeks to capture the spirit of spring—its light, its freshness, and the quiet joy found in the presence of flowers. The painting reflects his ongoing interest in transforming everyday subjects into vibrant, contemporary compositions in which color becomes the primary language of expression.
The large scale of the artwork enhances the presence of the bouquet, allowing the colors to radiate and fill the surrounding space with a sense of vitality and renewal.
