In 1937, Gerrit Rietveld designed the New Amsterdam armchair for the steamship ‘New Amsterdam’.
This flagship of the Holland America Line made its maiden voyage to New York on May 10, 1938. The armchair was part of a complete interior design that Rietveld created for a first-class cabin.
With his minimalist style, Rietveld created a cabin designed to meet the luxury and comfort of the modern ocean traveler. The most striking feature of the interior design was the comfortable armchairs. As part of Rietveld Originals, this design is now available in the Spectrum collection.
