Space age sputnik futurist pendant light. One of the most characteristic ceiling lamps from the 1970s. The central metal part is chrome-plated steel. This is joined by dark-stained, curved wooden “wings”, which give the lamp a Scandinavian effect. The circular cutouts (holes) on the wooden elements not only play an aesthetic role, but also lighten the robust structure. The spheres are made of hand-blown Murano glass. The value of the lamp is given by the special texture of the lampshades: n The glass contains thousands of tiny air bubbles, which makes the material appear dense and “icy”, Pulegoso technique. This type also existed in three- and five-arm versions, often combining wood with chrome, a hallmark of the “Space Age” style typical of the era.EMI Poljčane was a former Yugoslav (now Slovenian) metal and lamp manufacturing company that became famous during the Mid-Century Modern and Space Age eras (especially in the 1970s). The factory was fond of adopting and manufacturing Western European (Italian, German) designs under license for the socialist bloc market. The chandelier was based on the design of the Italian Mazzega, but was manufactured by the Yugoslav EMI Poljčane.
