Estimated value: €2,200 – €3,200 This richly carved wooden temple panel depicts a standing divine couple, identifiable as Vishnu and Lakshmi, executed in high relief and originally intended as an architectural element within a South Indian temple or sacred interior. The composition is crowned by a kirtimukha, the protective demonic face traditionally placed above sacred depictions as a symbol of protection and cosmic power. The panel is crafted from heavy hardwood, likely teak, and shows clear signs of manual craftsmanship: sharp carving lines, variations in depth, and natural asymmetry in the details. The figures wear richly detailed jewelry, crowns, and traditional clothing, with a dynamic posture characteristic of South Indian temple art. Crucially, original polychromy is present. Remnants of red, yellow, black, and possibly gold are visible in the deeper recessed areas, with natural wear on protruding parts. Under microscopy, multiple paint layers are visible with aged binders and mineral pigment residues, indicating prolonged exposure and authentic age. The paint is not evenly or modernly applied, but built up in layers with natural degradation, consistent with ritualistic and decorative use over a long period.
