Hand-carved Solid Hardwood — Tamil Nadu — Mid-20th Century This impressive, hand-carved panel, almost a meter high, is a beautiful example of South Indian wood carving art from Tamil Nadu. It depicts the goddess Meenakshi Amman, the patron deity of Madurai, recognizable by the characteristic parrot at her side. In Indian iconography, this symbol stands for love, eloquence, and connection with nature. CRAFTSMANSHIP AND MATERIAL Weighing over 10 kilograms and entirely carved from a single solid block of hardwood, this object possesses an enormous physical and visual presence. The panel shows the goddess in a classic posture on a lotus throne, surrounded by a lushly carved Prabhavali (aura) of floral motifs and mythical birds. The depth of the carving and the detailed finish of the jewels and crown bear witness to the craftsmanship from the Madurai region. CONDITION AND APPEARANCE The panel is in excellent vintage condition. Over the years, the wood has developed a rich, warm patina that adds extra depth to the carving's details. Natural shrinkage cracks in the solid wood emphasize the authenticity of the natural product and its mid-20th-century dating. The back is traditionally finished flat and equipped with a robust hanging bracket.
