Product description
South African Raku Ceramic Lion – African-Inspired Sculpture – Handcrafted Decorative Art
A charming and highly expressive ceramic lion from South Africa, combining African-inspired artistic traditions with the fascinating Japanese Raku firing technique.
This delightful sculpture features a wonderfully stylised lion with a striking geometric face, an impressive circular mane and a beautifully balanced, almost architectural silhouette. Its unusual colour palette combines deep emerald green, vibrant yellow, coral red, ivory and earthy charcoal grey, creating a particularly attractive decorative effect.
The contrasting surfaces, subtle crackled glaze and smoky, textured finish give the sculpture a distinctive character. The lion’s expressive face and simplified forms reflect the spirit of African decorative art, while its playful proportions lend it a charming, almost whimsical personality.
About the Raku Technique
Raku is a traditional Japanese ceramic firing technique that originated in the 16th century and became closely associated with the Japanese tea ceremony. In contemporary Western Raku, pottery is typically removed from the kiln while still extremely hot and placed in combustible materials, producing dramatic smoke effects, distinctive crackled glazes and unpredictable variations in colour. Each firing creates unique surface characteristics, making every piece individual.
Condition: Very good vintage condition, with beautiful glaze effects and natural crackling characteristic of Raku ceramics.
A delightful and unusual decorative object, perfect for adding colour, personality and artistic character to a contemporary, minimalist or eclectic interior. An appealing piece for collectors of studio pottery, African-inspired art and unusual ceramic sculptures.
