This small Japanese cabinet from the Meiji period belongs to a typology of narrow vertical storage furniture, designed to optimize space within domestic interiors. Its compact width and modest depth suggest an auxiliary use, intended for storing personal items, documents, or everyday objects.
The piece is crafted from Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), a light and stable wood widely used in late 19th-century Japanese furniture for its resistance to humidity. The interior is organized with fixed shelves, while the exterior construction is reinforced with original iron fittings at corners and structural points.
The hinged front door retains its original iron pull and a simple, durable locking system.
