"Gate of Balance"
Two towering forms, separate – yet connected.
In the center, a circle, a breakthrough that focuses the view and simultaneously opens it up.
This sculpture speaks of opposites that do not fight, but complement each other. The vertical division represents duality – light and shadow, movement and stillness, inside and outside. The circle in between is the symbol of connection, the eye of balance.
The vibrant turquoise patterns seem to move across the dark structure, like energy seeking its way through matter. They embody change and life, while the black form lends permanence and stability.
When light falls on the work, subtle shadows emerge that continually redraw the motif. Thus, the sculpture changes throughout the day – it breathes, it lives with its space.
"Only by looking through do we find balance. Only in contrast do we recognize the whole."
Rotan Hunt – a self-taught artist from the picturesque Taunus region in Hesse – has dedicated himself to a mission: to breathe new life into wood and other materials. His passion began early, deepened in a renowned carpentry workshop in Austria, and developed into true craftsmanship.
But Hunt never settled for traditional methods. He combines wood with stone, glass, resin, metal, and acrylic paints, creating works that are simultaneously raw, powerful, and full of expression. He refined his acrylic painting skills through the teachings of an artist at the Düsseldorf Art Academy – an experience that lends his work additional depth and intensity.
His mentor, the French artist Benoît Averly, also had a formative influence, showing him how wooden sculptures can convey not only form but also emotion.
Today, Rotan Hunt transforms his home into a vibrant gallery: a place where visitors can experience the energy of his works firsthand. Each work speaks of the joy of experimentation, the search for balance between nature and modernity – and the urge to transform the everyday into something extraordinary.
