Søholm Keramik Studio Vase by Einar Johansen
Model 3329 – Denmark, 1960s
Height 25.5 cm | Sculptural Relief Glaze | Bornholm Studio Production
A refined example of Danish mid-century studio ceramics, this vase was designed by Einar Johansen for Søholm Keramik, Bornholm, during the 1960s.
Model 3329 presents a more compact yet equally expressive interpretation of Johansen’s sculptural language. The form rises from a rounded shoulder into a gently tapering cylindrical neck, finished in matte earth-brown stoneware, contrasting beautifully with the vivid glazed body below.
Design & Surface
The lower body is structured with vertical rhythmic relief bands—softly rounded, almost biomorphic indentations arranged in measured repetition. These sculptural panels create a tactile, architectural texture that catches light dynamically.
The glaze is a luminous, layered blue—shifting from deep teal to cobalt—with subtle tonal transitions. The relief recesses intensify the depth of colour, while the upper matte section provides material contrast and visual grounding.
This interplay between glossy glaze and matte surface is quintessential Søholm Studio: restrained, deliberate, and materially intelligent.
About the Designer
Einar Johansen (1927–2002) was one of Søholm’s leading artistic forces during the golden decades of Danish studio ceramics. Trained as a sculptor, he introduced strong relief structures and expressive glazing to Bornholm production, elevating functional ceramics into sculptural design objects.
His studio-marked works are particularly sought after, as they represent Søholm’s most artistically ambitious output.
