Product description
Beautiful set of four vintage dining chairs model 'SB16', designed by Cees Braakman and produced by Pastoe in the 1950s. This model is part of Braakman's well-known birch series, a range of furniture characterized by light constructions, bent wood, and a strikingly modern design. This set comes from Amsterdam, where the chairs stood on a houseboat for years. They have been carefully restored in a workshop, preserving their natural patina. Both the laminated birch wood frames and the teak veneer on the seat and back have been refinished, with beautiful signs of wear deliberately left visible. This way, the chairs retain their character, while the warm color and grain of the wood are beautifully brought out again. The curved legs and elegant back give the chairs an airy appearance, with the darker seat and back beautifully contrasting with the lighter birch wood. Especially from the side, you can clearly see how simple and clever the construction is. The same attention to detail is evident in features like the contrasting cover caps on both the back and the seat, which add that little extra to the design. A strong piece of Dutch design from the 1950s, clearly influenced by the work of Charles and Ray Eames, but translated by Braakman in a completely unique way. Light, airy, and typically mid-century, with a design that still looks surprisingly modern more than seventy years later.
