A rare set of five sculptural Model 4903 wall hooks, designed by Carl Auböck II and executed by the Werkstätte Carl Auböck in Vienna during the 1950s. Cast in solid brass, the hooks combine polished edges with colored surfaces in black, deep red, green, orange-red and pale yellow, giving this group an especially striking and playful character. The characteristic model measures approximately 19 cm in height and is one of Auböck’s distinctive modernist interpretations of the everyday object.
Carl Auböck II (1900–1957) studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar under Johannes Itten and subsequently transformed his family’s Viennese metal workshop into one of the most distinctive design ateliers of European modernism. His work combines Bauhaus-influenced functional clarity with organic, often subtly surreal sculptural forms. The MAK in Vienna describes precisely this synthesis of minimalism, abstraction, material experimentation and sculptural treatment of everyday objects as central to Auböck’s contribution to Austrian design.
The Model 4903 is an excellent expression of this approach: an ordinary coat hook becomes a small architectural sculpture. Its sweeping, almost calligraphic silhouette is balanced by several functional projections, while the contrast between brass and color emphasizes the contours of the cast form.
This five-piece set is particularly appealing because of its varied original color palette. Together, the hooks form not only a functional ensemble but also a highly decorative wall composition. Preserved in very good vintage condition, they show only discreet traces of age and use, retaining the authentic character and surface quality of the period.
A collectible and highly characteristic example of Austrian post-war modernism, combining craftsmanship, functionality and the unmistakable sculptural language of the Werkstätte Carl Auböck.
