Product description
Designed by Schiønning & Elgaard in Denmark during the 1960s, this set of six dining chairs combines a light, almost graphic frame with an unusually expressive backrest. The slender tapered legs continue into the rear uprights, while the side rails are shaped into broad, flowing curves beneath the seat. These transitions give the frame a continuous appearance, with very little visual interruption between the structural elements.
The defining feature is the sculpted teak backrest. Seen from the front, it forms a shallow concave curve, rising gently towards both ends and dipping subtly through the centre. The lower edge is cut with a more angular profile, creating a restrained contrast with the softer upper line. From the rear, the connection between the backrest and the rounded uprights is particularly well resolved, allowing the supports to remain clearly visible while becoming part of the overall silhouette. Variation in the grain and colour of the teak gives each chair its own character within the set.
The upholstered seats have a softly rounded rectangular profile and sit lightly within the surrounding timber construction. They have been newly upholstered in a neutral beige woven fabric, providing a quiet contrast with the warm brown tones of the teak. The combination of the slender frame, open back and broad shaped backrest gives the chairs a balanced presence around a dining table without appearing heavy.
The complete set has been carefully cleaned, fully inspected and restored. The teak has been treated with a high-quality furniture oil, bringing back depth and variation in the wood while preserving its natural character. The seats have been newly upholstered and the chairs remain in very good restored vintage condition, with minor signs of age and use consistent with their period.
