Floor Lamp Serien Raumleuchten — Design by Manfred Wolf, 1980s
A light column nearly two meters tall, designed by Manfred Wolf for the German company Serien Raumleuchten.
Wolf founded the company in the mid-1980s with Jean-Marc da Costa, both graduates of the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach. They built their first prototypes in the workshop of Wolf's father and grandfather, who made fittings for suitcases and bags there; it was there that they learned to bend, weld, and shape metal. What they designed went against the spirit of the times: while the rest of the design world indulged in postmodern color and form, they opted for austere, architectural clarity.
This is reflected here. Four frosted glass panels in a cross shape, set between chrome-plated rods on a stepped base. At the top, the panels diverge around a glass plateau with four sockets. The light strikes the ceiling and simultaneously sinks down through the glass, illuminating the entire column from within. Not a lamp in the corner, but an illuminated object in the room.
Requires space and a ceiling that can handle it. Next to a seating area, in a high hallway, or as a vertical counterweight against a long wall.
