This ceramic catchall dish takes us back to the extraordinary creative freedom that characterized Vallauris during the 1960s and 1970s. Ceramics then readily left the dining table to adorn console tables, bookshelves, and coffee tables. Shapes became unfettered, glazes more daring, and everyday objects gradually took on the appearance of small sculptures. This is precisely what gives this piece its charm. Its asymmetrical silhouette unfolds in a particularly elegant movement. The dish gradually stretches out before rising into a long, curved end, almost as if formed in a single gesture. One can see in it a folded leaf, a wave, a horn, or simply that organic abstraction so characteristic of the 1960s-1970s aesthetic. The glaze work is remarkable. Deep browns mingle with ocher and amber yellow tones, interspersed with spectacular cream and pearl grey crystallizations. The firing process created irregular branching patterns that evoke sea foam, feathers, or certain mineral formations. Light catches these different textures and successively reveals the nuances of the glaze. It is also a true catchall dish, designed to be part of a home interior. On a console table in an entryway, on the top of a dresser to hold jewelry and small objects, or on a coffee table alongside beautiful books and a smoked glass vase. In the post-war decades, Vallauris experienced a period of remarkable effervescence. Ceramists there experimented with shapes, clays, glazes, and firing techniques, giving birth to a whole generation of objects where the boundary between utility and decoration deliberately became uncertain.
