This is the Sciangai coat rack, an iconic design by the Italian trio Jonathan De Pas, Donato D'Urbino, and Paolo Lomazzi for the manufacturer Zanotta. The design, dating from 1973, is a prime example of ingenious simplicity and functionality, inspired by the game Mikado.
The coat rack is made from eight solid wooden rods with an elegant black finish that subtly allows the wood grain to show through. The clever mechanism ensures that the coat rack can be opened and closed with a simple movement. When folded, the Sciangai is extremely compact and can be easily stored, while when open, it takes on a stable and sculptural form that immediately attracts attention.
This piece is in excellent overall condition. The deep black color is well preserved, and the structure is completely intact and functional. The piece shows the character of a carefully maintained design object.
