Magnificent large Doshin Kokeshi by Masae Fujikawa.
Masae Fujikawa (1942–2015) was a prominent Japanese kokeshi-shi (kokeshi artist) from Gunma Prefecture. He is widely recognized as one of the early masters of the Sōsaku (creative) Kokeshi movement. Fujikawa was born in Gunma Prefecture and began making kokeshi dolls at the age of 17 (in 1959). He apprenticed with the renowned master Ishida Kanji. In 1991, he founded the Fujikawa Craft Corporation, a family business that his brothers Kazumi and Eiichi later joined. Recognition: During his lifetime, he won numerous prestigious awards. His greatest achievement was winning the Prime Minister’s Award twice (in 1996 and 2002), the highest artistic honor in the kokeshi world. The "Doshin" (童心), which can be translated as "the childlike heart" or "childlike mind", is a well-known creative (sōsaku) kokeshi doll designed by the master artist Masae Fujikawa (also known by his artist name Shōei Fujikawa, 1942–2015) from Gunma Prefecture.
The doll radiates innocence, tenderness, and nostalgia, befitting the meaning of her name. She embodies the pure soul of a child.
Like many of Fujikawa's prized works, the doll has a harmonious, balanced, and refined form. The design combines compact, traditional woodturning with a modern aesthetic in which softness and precision come together. The Doshin is known for its striking, richly and atmospherically decorated kimono (featuring beautiful, finely painted seasonal floral motifs).
The face is finely and poetically drawn, characterized by a serene, calm, and emotional depth typical of the hand of this award-winning kokeshi-shi.
The height is 27 cm; please view the photos for the condition.
Please note: The items are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and/or tears/dents present to a greater or lesser extent.
