Cute signed Osanpo kokeshi.
Osanpo (お散歩) literally means "to take a walk" or "to enjoy a walk / a city or nature walk" in Japanese.
What a cute example! This is a beautiful example of a handmade creative kokeshi (sosaku kokeshi), turned and painted with love by an artisan from Japan.
A kokeshi is a traditional, minimalist wooden doll from Japan, originally from the northern hot spring (onsen) regions of Tohoku.
Traditionally, they have no arms or legs, but consist of a simple cylindrical body and a round head, often featuring subtle, delicate facial features and a painted kimono.
Each doll is turned by hand on a wood lathe from woods such as cherry or maple, and then hand-painted and varnished. In addition to the classic styles, there are modern variants (sosaku kokeshi), such as this doll with her unique hairstyle, playful red accent button, and refined floral details.
The maker's signature is on the bottom of the kokeshi.
