The switch/dimmer integrated into the base is no longer functional; it was replaced long ago with a cord switch/dimmer (see photos), which works perfectly.
There are signs of oxidation on the brass parts (see photos), more pronounced on the underside, which is not usually visible.
The base plate is lined with black felt on the underside.
