Product description
Original lithograph handsigned and numbered in sanguine by Sam Szafran. This rare lithograph depicts Sam Szafran's wife, called Lilette, sat on a famous chair designed by Antonio Gaudi, in the artist's studio full of the shadows of philodendrons. This print, which evokes the finish of the pastel, is a variation over one of the iconic subject of the artis. Limited edition of 120 proofs on a precious japan paper, printed by Idem Paris. Dimensions : 40,15 x 30,7 inches. Sam Szafran is certainly the most important pastellist of the XXth century. He was born in Paris in 1934, a son of Polish Jewish immigrants. Following abstract beginnings at the Atelier de la Grande Chaumière, where the young artist studied under Henri Goetz, he discovered pastel and watercolor in the early 1960s. During the postwar period he encountered as well Jean Arp, Yves Klein, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Joan Mitchell, Alberto Giacometti, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Martine Franck. He became famous with his anamorphosis of parisian staircases of Saint-Germain-des-prés, and his canvases depicting studios. In 1993, he received the Grand Prix des Arts de la Ville de Paris. Retrospectives were organized by Jean Clair and Jean-Louis Prat in 1999 and 2000 at the Fondation Pierre Gianadda in Martigny (Switzerland) and at the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence (France). His work is present in some international museums like MoMA of New York and the Metropolitan Museum. Supported by gallerists like Jacques Kerchache and Claude Bernard (historical dealer of Francis Bacon, David Hockney, Fernando Botero, Balthus, Alberto Giacometti, Philippe Hiquily...), Szafran's work is collected by great collectors in the US and in Europe, among whom Leonard Gianadda, Terry de Gunzburg, William Louis-Dreyfus...
