ProfessionalProduct description
The face is calm, almost silent. Saint Thérèse holds to herself the crucifix surrounded by roses, which is enough to distinguish her from all others. This image of the young Carmelite belongs to one of the most singular pages of early 20th-century French religious history. Thérèse Martin entered the Carmelite convent in Lisieux at fifteen and led a brief existence there, far from the world. She died in 1897, at only twenty-four years old. Beatified in 1923 and then canonized in 1925, she became Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face. The roses accompanying her echo the "shower of roses" she had announced as a symbol of the graces she would continue to spread after her death. Made of polychrome plaster and approximately 30 cm high, it reproduces the iconography that has become emblematic of Thérèse. The brown Carmelite habit, the large light cloak, the dark veil, and, clasped against her heart, the crucifix and the roses. Time has deeply affected its paintwork. The light cloak shows beautiful old crackling and numerous lifts and flakes of polychromy. Restoration should be considered to consolidate and preserve this now fragile polychromy. But there remains something particularly touching about this piece. The face has retained its softness, the hands still embrace the roses, and the faded colors tell of nearly a century of presence. Restored judiciously, it would regain a beautiful appearance without needing to completely erase what time has left on it. Height approximately 30 cm. France, circa .
