Russian lacquer box with Mary and Christ Child
Small hand-painted Russian lacquer box with an Orthodox depiction of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child. The composition follows the well-known Eleusa type, also known as the ‘Mother of God of Tenderness’, where Mary and Christ hold their faces close to each other. The box is made of black lacquered papier-mâché with a red lacquered interior. The lid features a finely painted icon in red, blue, and ocher tones against a gold-colored background. The sides are finished with decorative gold-colored tendrils.
