RS Associates, based in Montreal, was a major player in the Canadian design world in the 1950s and 1960s.
They were masters of translating the modern, sleek Danish style into the North American living room. While many factories at the time transitioned to mass production, RS Associates remained true to true craftsmanship and high-quality woods. Because the company primarily focused on its domestic market at the time, their furniture is a rare sight on the European mainland.
This particular piece has had a remarkable journey: the table was taken to Germany by a Canadian soldier while he was stationed there. After several moves and years of loyal service, it was time for a new chapter, and this unique piece is now available in Europe.
The side table itself is a beautiful example of their style: sleek, elegant, and with that typical mid-century look. The top is beautifully shaped and has refined, beveled edges, making it appear almost to float.
The legs taper towards the bottom, giving the table that characteristic airy look. A truly special feature of this model is the handy extra shelf beneath the top. This magazine rack isn't just a shelf; it's stylishly upholstered in black leather. This gives the table that extra edge; the contrast between the warm wood and the sleek, dark leather makes the design both rugged and chic.
In our workshop, we've thoroughly inspected the table and prepared it for many years of enjoyment. To optimally preserve the wood, we've applied a modern, protective coating that protects the top from grease, dirt, and moisture.
Although there are some minor signs of wear here and there, consistent with the furniture's age and rich history, these are never obtrusive.
We'd also like to mention a repair to the top carried out by a cabinetmaker from the military base in the 1970s, which resulted in a slight discoloration near the repair (see photos).
The result is a characterful design piece ready to once again become the focal point of your seating area.
