Ostindia , voted "Dinnerware of the Century" in Sweden, owes its existence to a hidden treasure. After a ship returning from China sank off the coast of Gothenburg in 1745, a piece of porcelain from the cargo somehow ended up in a cupboard at the Rörstrand factory. Many years later, in 1932, the wife of factory manager Knut Almström saw it and uttered the famous words: "Knut, I think it's worth making something out of this ...". And so a shard of Chinese porcelain became the model for an iconic design by Rörstrand.
Designer: Nils Emil Lundström. One of Rörstrand's most experienced designers and one of its most versatile. Initially working as a pattern designer in 1896, Nils Emil Lundström established a reputation over a period of 40 years with his "picture motifs" on tableware and especially on vases. One of his greatest and most enduring achievements is the pattern for the Ostindia dinner service, dating from 1932. Lundström also gained fame as a ceramicist, textile designer and furniture designer, and his work was featured in a number of international design exhibitions in the early years of the last century.
