Van der Werf paints with acrylic, oil on canvas, panel and paper, often supplemented with chalk, pencil, textile and cardboard. He works with many whites that transition into brown or blue variants, glazed in transparent layers of ocher, sienna and other earth tones. He works from an inner strength, a pursuit of certain shapes, contrasts and colours, for a certain material and only after he has transferred these to the canvas do they show him what he really wants. His work is close to music, the most abstract art form. Material, color and composition radiate a calm that feels soothing and powerful. The work is characterized by a unity, the result of a continuous search and exploration of boundaries, based on a concentration and drive that has led to exhibitions at home and abroad. Van der Werf's paintings are included in various private and corporate collections in countries such as Poland, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Whoever lives without inner images, without the imagination, without the sensibility one needs to associate thoughts within oneself, will see nothing at all
