We are pleased to present this oil painting on paper mounted on canvas. Although the painting depicts a young woman with all the typical features of an eighteenth-century woman, the pictorial style suggests a later date, around the beginning of the nineteenth century. It was likely painted by an artist still influenced by eighteenth-century fashions.
The painting depicts an elaborate and complex scene. The young woman in the foreground is a beautiful damsel in elegant silk dresses in eighteenth-century fashion. Every detail of her clothing and her carefully styled hairstyle suggests a high social position. The young lady is likely portrayed in a sumptuous garden, featuring lush vegetation and some typical garden features (a low wall, a vase) typical of the gardens of wealthy historic homes. On the left, a path traces the perspective and leads the viewer's eye to the figure of a gentleman strolling absorbed in thought. The background is completed by a mountain landscape. The soft light and darkness of the landscape suggest that the scene is set in the evening.
This is a captivating scene that leaves the viewer with many possibilities for interpretation of the two characters: the young woman leaning against a low architectural wall is absorbed in thought, her face reflecting various emotions (expectation, worry, patience, etc.); the gentleman in the distant background walks with his arms folded and his head bowed, but in the opposite direction to the young woman. You can immerse your imagination in this fantastic scene, study the details, and give your own interpretation.
The pictorial quality is excellent. Even working on a small scale, the artist masterfully depicts every detail, from the landscape to the characters.
