The ML33 rocking chair, designed by Hans J. Wegner for the Danish manufacturer A/S Mikael Laursen, is one of his early designs. Wegner developed the model around 1940, and it was showcased at the Købestævnet exhibition in Fredericia in 1942. As one of the first rocking chairs in the designer's portfolio, the ML33 exemplifies his interest in combining traditional woodworking craftsmanship with user comfort. This particular piece was manufactured in the 1950s. Its frame is constructed from oak. The chair has been professionally and carefully restored by removing old coatings, staining and finishing with varnish. The work was carried out by a talented carpenter with over 20 years of experience. The seat has been reupholstered in high-quality grey wool fabric, and the foam padding has also been replaced. Thanks to this restoration, the chair looks magnificent and is ready to serve its new owner for years to come, withstanding the rigors of daily use. Its distinctive, widely spaced runners ensure a smooth rocking motion, while the ergonomically contoured backrest and armrests provide comfortable support for the entire body. The chair's proportions make it equally suitable for daily relaxation or as a standalone statement piece in a living room or reading nook. The ML33 represents an early stage of Danish modernism, predating Wegner’s most famous designs from the 1950s and 1960s. Unlike many of the designer's later armchairs, the classic approach to furniture construction is particularly evident here: the wooden frame remains visible, and its form is derived primarily from function and usage. As a result, the armchair maintains the balance—characteristic of Wegner—between structural simplicity and refined detailing. Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was one of the most important Danish designers of the 20th century. Trained as a cabinetmaker, his mastery of traditional woodworking techniques profoundly influenced his design approach. Over the course of his career, he created more than 500 furniture models, many of which have become significant examples of Danish design. A/S Mikael Laursen was a Danish furniture company with which Wegner collaborated early in his career. The ML33 is one of the models resulting from this partnership; surviving examples originate from both the initial production period and later manufacturing runs.
