Product description
Large, antique and unique folk art religious sculpture, in wood, entirely hand-carved, Alpine, Austro-Tyrolean work, circa 1900-1930. Depicting the Holy Virgin Mary, standing on a crescent moon crushing a serpent. This iconography traditionally corresponds to the Immaculate Conception, a widespread theme in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Figure with a soft face and free-flowing hair, wearing a loose and fluid drape. The wood surface, probably linden, is stained and polished, offering today a warm, satiny patina between dark brown and burgundy red. The underside of the base shows traces of tools and old work, and illegible, probably later, inscriptions.
Height 44cm, max width 17cm, max depth 14cm. Good general condition, a natural wood crack is noted, starting from the side of the head, descending to the torso and abdomen, then continuing under the sleeve to the side of the base. The tip of one hand has a small chip, and some traces of wear are visible on the other hand and the base. These defects remain discreet and consistent with the age and use of the piece. Approximately 800-900gr.
