Product description
Regula Brenner-Nünlist – LEGURA Sculptural Ceramic Bowl with Gold Lustre, Swiss Postmodern Studio Pottery, c. 1990 An extraordinary sculptural ceramic bowl by Swiss artist Regula Brenner-Nünlist (1954–2009), signed LEGURA, combining exuberant postmodern decoration with an almost surreal arrangement of applied gold and black elements. Part functional vessel, part ceramic sculpture, this remarkable work captures the playful experimentation of late twentieth-century European studio ceramics. Design & Decoration The bowl features a deep, luminous turquoise-blue interior decorated with rhythmic brushstrokes in cobalt blue and sea green, punctuated by small lime-green leaf-shaped motifs. Its exterior is finished in soft pink, densely covered with delicate green dots. Surrounding the body is an extraordinary constellation of individually modelled, curling projections, alternating between brilliant metallic gold lustre and glossy black. The reverse introduces an entirely different decorative composition: expressive geometric motifs, spirals, zigzags and vivid accents of turquoise, lavender, pink and green. The contrast between the controlled geometry of the painted surfaces and the almost organic exuberance of the applied elements gives the object its remarkable sculptural presence. Depending on its orientation, the piece reads as a bowl, an abstract creature or an autonomous ceramic sculpture. Its aesthetic shares the experimental spirit of the Memphis movement, while remaining distinctly individual in its combination of painting, ceramic modelling and ornament. Artist & Authentication Research Regula Brenner-Nünlist (1954–2009) was a Swiss ceramic artist whose work explored the boundaries between functional ceramics, decorative art and sculpture. Examples of her work are preserved in the collection of the Musée Ariana, Geneva, Switzerland's important museum dedicated to ceramics and glass. The present object bears the distinctive hand-painted signature LEGURA. Extensive research conducted in 2026 established the connection between this signature and Brenner-Nünlist's work. In correspondence with Musée Ariana, a museum representative examined photographs of the object and its signature and expressed a strongly positive opinion regarding its attribution to the artist. Further research by DognyAuction, Lausanne, identified the LEGURA signature on documented works by Brenner-Nünlist, including museum material and an independently catalogued teapot. A particularly relevant comparison is a polychrome ceramic plate dated 1992 in the Musée Ariana collection (inventory AR 1997-180), featuring related painted decoration and applied gold ornamentation. The attribution is therefore supported by museum correspondence, comparative collection documentation and independent auction-house research. This research does not constitute a formal certificate of authenticity. Details Artist: Regula Brenner-Nünlist (1954–2009) Signature: LEGURA, hand-painted Origin: Switzerland Period: Circa 1990 Material: Glazed and painted ceramic with applied sculptural elements and gold-lustre decoration Style: Postmodern, Swiss studio ceramics, Memphis-era design Form: Sculptural bowl / centrepiece / ceramic art object Dimensions: To be confirmed by physical measurement Condition: Please refer to the detailed photographs; a full condition statement will be provided following inspection. Collector's Note An unusually expressive example of Brenner-Nünlist's sculptural ceramic language, distinguished by its elaborate applied decoration, vivid colour contrasts and striking three-dimensional composition. The combination of the distinctive LEGURA signature, documented museum comparisons and its highly individual sculptural form makes this a particularly compelling piece for collectors of postmodern ceramics, Swiss studio pottery and late twentieth-century design.
