Magnificent Christofle Art Deco style crumb sweeper made of alfenide and wood. Includes original box.
It is in Art Deco style, with its pure geometric lines and its beautiful dark wood handle with a lovely grain. It bears two distinctive hallmarks, one a Christofle chess knight and the other of alfenide, a metallic alloy patented by the house. It is in its original packaging with a care label.
About the Christofle brand:
Christofle is one of the most important silversmith houses on the Parisian scene, creating exceptional tableware, refined jewelry, and home accessories of great elegance and mastery since 1830. In 1850, Charles Halphen founded his jewelry workshop in Paris. The metal Alfenide, whose name is clearly a play on words with the founder's name, was used as the base for the silver-plated items from this factory. It was an alloy of copper, nickel, and zinc, which was perfect as a base metal due to its silvery sheen, in contrast to the brass and copper still common until then (which have a yellowish-red color).
The Parisian jewelry and silversmith manufacturer Christofle began a collaboration with Halphen, in which Christofle created the designs, Halphen produced the pieces from his Alfenide, and these were silver-plated by Christofle and marketed under the name Alfenide. This gave Christofle the opportunity to target a broader market segment, and provided Halphen with great success.
After Halphen's death, his widow took over. In 1888, Christofle definitively took over the factory and continued to produce cutlery under the Alfenide line until around World War II. Although not widely known, these pieces are inextricably linked to the Christofle name. With their beautiful designs and excellent quality, Alfenide remains a quality brand for luxury table services. Today, they still manufacture pieces following their classic style, without losing their usual quality.
