Vintage ceramic African head, designed by Jaap Ravelli, produced by Potterie Ravelli in Valkenburg (South Holland). The artwork dates from the 1950s and is made of characteristic dark brown earthenware. This specific piece is particularly special and rare because it is likely a prototype and because it is housed in the original wooden transport crate with straw, featuring the authentic 'Ravelli Potterie' brand emblem on the side. This is a characteristic ceramic bust designed by Jaap Ravelli for Potterie Ravelli in the 1960s. The design displays the distinctive stylized form language and the deep black, matte finish that make Ravelli's designs from this period so recognizable.
The object is crafted from ceramic and finished in a matte black glaze. The bust is presented in a custom-made wooden crate, featuring the original Ravelli Potterie label and the name 'Monique' on the inside of the lid. The figurine has a hollow base, which is typical of the production method of the pottery in Valkenburg.
The bust is in good vintage condition, befitting its age and material. Over the years, the ceramic has developed an authentic patina that contributes to the historical character of the piece.
