Product description
A rattan armchair from the 1950s characterised by a sinuous and highly sculptural structure, constructed through a succession of curved elements that continuously define the base, armrests and profile of the seat. The design makes full use of rattan as a structural material, exploiting its flexibility and ability to be bent in order to create a light, organic and visually dynamic form. The supporting frame is composed of rattan canes of different diameters, bent and joined with traditional bindings, while the seat and backrest are made from thinner elements arranged lengthwise and woven into the structure. The large looped armrests continue in a flowing line towards the front of the chair, while the base develops through broad curves that visually lighten the overall composition and emphasise the handcrafted nature of its construction. The strongly reclined profile, high backrest and low seat give the armchair a relaxed and enveloping character. The repetition of the canes and bindings also creates a distinctive graphic rhythm, particularly evident from the side and rear views, making the structure itself the principal decorative element. A representative example of the exploration of organic forms and natural materials that characterised part of 1950s furniture design. Condition: Good overall condition, minor signs of use.
